Chesterfield got off to an eventful start to their National League campaign on Saturday afternoon as they drew 2-2 away against newly-promoted Dorking Wanderers. The Spireites took the lead when Akwasi Asante scored in the 18th minute. However, Paul Cook’s game plan was in tatters when goalkeeper Lucas Covolan was shown a straight red card after only 28 minutes after stamping on an opponent. With no other goalkeeper currently registered with the club, midfielder Ollie Banks ended up playing in goal for over an hour. Despite this huge setback, Chesterfield went 2-0 up four minutes before half-time thanks to a goal from Armando Dobra on his debut. However, the Spireites inevitably came under huge pressure throughout the second half and ended up squandering their two goal lead. James McShane scored for Dorking in the 67th minute before Luke Moore found an equaliser in the 77th minute. The Spireites clung onto a point but went down to nine men in injury time when Branden Horton was controversially shown a second yellow card for taking too long to take a throw-in.

Alfreton Town staged an impressive fightback to earn a point on the opening day of the National League North season as they drew 2-2 at home against Chester. The visitors took the lead after 18 minutes when Kurt Willoughby scored and then doubled their advantage just six minutes later when Joe Lynch found the back of the net. It was cult hero Tom Denton though who salvaged a point for the Reds on his third debut for the club. The big striker bagged himself a brace with the second goal coming in injury time.

Buxton’s first game back in the National League North after last season’s NPL Premier Division league title triumph ended in a 1-1 draw away at Peterborough Sports. Sports took the lead in the 32nd minute thanks to a converted penalty from Dan Jarvis. Jason Gilchrist equalised for the Bucks in the 41st minute. The hosts then had to play the majority of the second half with ten men when Kyle Barker was sent off in the 48th minute. Despite the one man advantage though, Buxton couldn’t find a winning goal on the opening day.

New Mills’s FA Cup campaign ended at the first hurdle when they were defeated 2-0 away at Ossett United in the Extra Preliminary Qualifying Round. First half goals from Basile Zottos and Joe Stacey condemned the Millers to defeat.

Matlock Town’s final pre-season friendly ahead of their 2022/23 campaign ended with a dour 0-0 draw away at Carlton Town.

Chesterfield Ladies were thrashed 5-0 away at Solihull Moors Women in their second pre-season friendly of the summer.

Matlock Town Ladies were also soundly beaten over the weekend as they lost 5-0 away at local rivals Belper Town Ladies in a pre-season friendly.
