Chesterfield’s Liam Pitchford and Belper’s Hollie Pearne Webb win Gold at the Commonwealth Games

North Derbyshire had a golden day at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday as first Chesterfield’s Liam Pitchford won Gold in the doubles table tennis and then Belper’s Hollie Pearne Webb Captained the England Women’s Hockey team to Gold.

Pitchford believes his table tennis doubles win with Paul Drinkhall is “better than the Gold Coast” after the pair won gold on Sunday.

The English duo successfully defended their doubles title won in Australia after beating India’s Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Sharath Kamal Achanta in a repeat of their gold-medal clash in 2018.

After a nervy start, England lost the first set but managed to win the next two in front of an energetic crowd at the NEC.

India levelled in the fourth set and the match came down to a crucial fifth, but England did enough to retain their Commonwealth title, with Pitchford describing the win as “amazing”.

Belper’s Hollie Pearne Webb overwhelmed with England Gold at Birmingham 2022.

England women’s hockey team defeated Australia 2-1 in front of a packed house at the University of Birmingham to take gold at the Commonwealth Games for the first time.

Holly Hunt and Tess Howard got the goals for the hosts and though the Hockeyroos scored 19 seconds from time, there was not enough time to find an equaliser.

Hollie spoke to North Derbyshire Radio’s Michael Weadock after claiming the gold medal.
